Embedded in the National biobank-initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Interdisciplinary Bank of Biological materials and Data Würzburg (ibdw) was build up in 2011/2012 as a centralized comprehensive biobank; initial funding was ~7.5 Mio. €/5 years. Storage and handling of liquid BM in -80ºC central ibdw automated repositories (Liconic-Stores) is operated according to OECD/ISBER standards in a separate temperature & air humidity-controlled new building contributed by the University Hospital in 2011/12. Since 01/2014 we systematically collect solid (e.g., tissues, biopsies) and liquid (e.g., whole blood, serum, urine, saliva) biological materials (BM) from all patients and study participants of the Medical Campus Würzburg. In addition, the ibdw as leader of Work-Package 4 (WP4, public relations & ELSI) significantly contributed to the German Biobank Node (GBN, BMBF-funded from 2013-2017) and from 2017-2020 received BMBF-funding as one out of 11 German biobanks building the core of the German Biobank Alliance (GBA).
